Become A Master of Minimalism: Travel More

One of the best ways to learn how to live minimally is packing your life into a bag or two and taking off. Traveling forces you to become a master of minimalism; to look over the things you own, define what is a necessity and leave the rest.

I’ll share with you how you can learn from my travels and apply some Minimalism into your life.

My journey with Minimalism was not overnight, it’s happened in stages, and yours will too.

Now, I’m down to traveling with my backpack and a duffel bag (when I’m not traveling with surfboards), everything I bring with me has its place.

At its core, minimalism is about living with intention & learning to neglect the excess. Traveling forces you to take notice of what you have and define what you truly need. But, I never expected the side effects that would come along with it.

Side Effects of Minimalism

  • The things you own hold significant meaning or add value in your life
  • You’ll have more money to spend on valuable experiences
  • More freedom to travel / move
  • happiness / ↓ stress
  • Less shit in your life
  • Clear mindset

Minimizing your life creates an opportunity for you; more money, more time, more freedom. You won’t feel like you have an anchor holding you back from going where you want to, or squander time deciding what to bring.

Becoming A Master of Minimalism

You don’t have to be a traveler or backpacker learn how to master minimalism (but it does speed up the process).

Anyone can apply it to their lives, and they should. Let me show you how to get started. Focus on these questions and you’ll be on your way.

Will it serve a purpose?

Space may become limited, in order to maximize how you use it ask yourself, what purpose or function does this item provide?

Do I have something that already covers that?

If the answer is yes, consider replacing it with the new one or pass on the purchase.

This will help keep you from doubling up on things you don’t really need, which leads me to my next point.

Do you want it, need it, or both?

If it serves a function, ask yourself, “Is this something I need, or is it something I want?” and yes …. there is a difference.

If it falls under both, you have found a winner!

Your goal is to have the things you ‘need’ first then add the ‘wants’ later if there is room.

Once you start this process you’ll be amazed at how few things you actually need when you are on the road.

Is it going to last?

Owning less means the things you do own, should be able to last a long time. This is why we can have nice things 😁.

Cut out the quantity and raise the quality. The higher quality items become more appealing because they are designed to last.

You don’t want to keep buying the same thing over and over when it breaks. Wouldn’t you rather have invested in something higher quality that will last a lifetime (higher quality normally means a better warranty as well).

Does it add value?

Finally, does it add value? Or as Marie Kondo would say, “does it spark joy”? 🤗

Not everything has to be functional, last forever or be a necessity. If the item is meaningful to you or adds value to your life, then keep it.

Sentimental items, or things gathered on adventures that bring back good memories are more valuable than anything you can buy.

More Freedom, More Happiness, Less Stress

I now have the freedom to travel, adventure, move at will and I’m confident that where ever I go I’ll have everything I need with me.

When you start Minimizing the ‘stuff’ you have in your life and get down to what you truly need you will find yourself less stressed and overall happier.

Now it’s your turn, take a look at the things you own, figure out how they fit into your life… Start your journey to become a master of mimalism.
